After tourist attractions, travel series goes to gay bars
Besides watching openly gay anchorman Steve Kmetko on Entertainment News, you should also check out the E! Channel's Wild On series. Focusing on a different locations each week, Wild On is a travel show that takes viewers to different locations around the world based on a theme that completes the show's title, such as Wild on the Riviera or Wild on the Caribbean.
After the usual daytime tourist attractions, each show takes viewers on a tour of both the straight and gay night spots at each location and includes interviews with lesbigay travelers. For example, Wild on South Beach visited all of our clubs in the area, culminating with extensive coverage of Miami's famous White Party.
On another show, Wild on the U.K., host Jules Asner joined lesbigay travelers on a bus service that takes people to all the hottest lesbigay clubs in London. Even some of the guest hosts who appear on the show with Asner, such as bisexual adult film star Serenity, openly display their attraction to young, hot bodies of the same sex just as the straight hosts do with the opposite sex.
Show may explore bi detective
It looks like NBC's Homicide: Life on the Street is finally beginning to explore the bisexuality of Det. Tim Bayliss. On a recent episode Bayliss, played by actor Kyle Secor, was subjected to homophobic taunts when fellow officers discovered the very out web site he had established for lesbigay officers and found out he had asked a male sergeant to go out on a date.
Bayliss, thinking he was protected from on the job anti-gay harassment and discrimination, decided to fight the bigotry and keep
his web site open until his supervisor told
him that to do so would be career suicide.
After much agonizing over what to do, the show ended with Bayliss sadly shutting down the site, but, knowing the detective's character and judging by his expression, I don't think that's the end of the matter.
Homicide: Life on the Street airs on NBC Fridays at 10 pm.
Lawless grateful to lesbian fans
Xena, Warrior Princess star Lucy Lawless and Jeri Ryan, who plays the half-Borg Seven of Nine on Star Trek: Voyager, talked about their roles as butt-kicking action stars whose primary on-screen relationships are

with other women in a feature interview in the April 10 issue of TV Guide.
When interviewer Michael Logan noted the extensive lesbian following the two women have drawn, Lawless said, "I'll be eternally grateful for that. The lesbians were our first fans, especially the lesbian community in New York City. They're the ones who started the underground buzz about us. They really gave Xena a groove."
Lawless said that at first she was surprised to learn the show was reported to have a lesbian subtext.
"At first I kind of laughed and said, oh, that's silly," Lawless said. "But then, because there's always a large lesbian contingent in the crews in New Zealand, we started playing it up on the set. We'd drop a few jokes into the scenes here and there. They weren't in the script, just impromptu lesbian high-jinks on the day of filming.”
This seemed to be the case on a new episode that recently aired out of sequence during re-run season in which Xena's life partner Gabrielle is hired to direct a play based on their adventures for a theater on the "Great Appian Way."
At the end of the episode, Mina, a Xena wanna-be who first appeared in the very lesbian "Day in the Life" episode and is one of the show-within-a-show's actresses, runs out of the theater holding the hand of a rival actress who had won the part of Xena.
Mina thanked Gabrielle for allowing her to be in the play and for the chance to meet her acting rival. Mina then exclaimed excitedly (I'm quoting loosely here), "This has allowed me to search my soul to find out who I really am. I now know, deep in my heart, that I am a thespian!” She then ran off with her new girlfriend in tow.
Early Lawless films on video
First Run Pictures will soon release home video versions of Peach and Bitter Song, two short films featuring Lucy Lawless in lesbian roles. In Peach, Lawless plays a tow truck driver who seduces a young Maori woman while in Bitter Song she portrays a nurse who helps a troubled young woman.
She's single, strong, independent
A report in the April 13 issue of the Advocate said that actress Gillian Anderson, who plays FBI agent Dana Scully on The X-Files, drew cheers from an audience when she thanked viewers who think Scully might be lesbian. Anderson made the comment as she

introduced Ellen DeGeneres' wife Anne Heche as the winner of the Creative Integrity award at the March 6 Women's Night annual fundraiser for the Los Angeles Gay and Lesbian Center.
"A lot of people have accused Scully of being gay," Anderson told the audience. "She's single, she's a strong, independent, suit-wearing female who chooses not to shack up with [the other lead character Mulder],

whom some people consider the sexiest male on TV. And all I have to say is thank you."
The same crowd gave what was described as “a thunderous standing ovation” to lesbian tennis legend and women's sports activist Billie Jean King when she received the Community Role Model award.
Ellen among top five voices on sex
Ellen DeGeneres has gotten some very good reviews for her role in EdTV, now playing in area theaters.
USA Today also reports that she was one of the top five choices on a recent on-line survey by SIECUS, the Sexuality Information and Education Council of the United States, that asked respondents to name "the most positive and influential sexual voices of the past 35 years."
"DeGeneres clearly brought more understanding of gay and lesbian issues," said SIECUS director Debra Haffner. "Coming out on the cover of Time magazine meant America had to talk about these issues."
Oh, sure, Oscar and Wilde aren't gay
Gay actor Nathan Lane is the voice of George in George and Martha, a new animated series about two hippo friends and their cohabiting alligator neighbors Oscar and Wilde, now playing on HBO.
Colin Mochrie, the voice of Oscar, says he thinks the alligators are "more than just friends," although the show's producer denies there was any intent to make them gay.

Hiding our emotions
Thanks to West Geauga High School senior Sara Boumphrey for writing a commentary protesting anti-gay discrimination that was featured in the Cleveland Plain Dealer's "Next" section for teens last month.
In her column, Boumphrey, who is heterosexual, said, “It would be horrible for any of us to hide our emotions because we feared what others would think, say or do to us... I have seen my gay friends trying to hide their relationships, afraid of what others might think or do. Love is a beautiful thing, whether between a man and a woman, two men or two ✓
women.
John Graves is the producer and host of Gaywaves, a lesbian-gay public affairs show on Cleveland's WRUW 91.1 FM Fridays at 7 pm. Dave Haskell, Jim McGrattan and Kim Jones also contributed to this column.
